1. Elektricity Festival, Rue du Docteur Lemoine, Reims Cathedral, 20th to 24th March 2013

You could be forgiven for assuming that this festival had something to do with electricity; it is however the name of a music festival which combines urban and contemporary music. Taking place in front of the Reims Cathedral, you can expect to experience new types of electronic music however, as well as a promising line up, put together by the festival organisers.

A firm favourite in the Reim festival and cultural world, it has a good track record (excuse the pun) and visitors can expect to attend some good performances.

2. Europuces Fair in Reims, Reims Exhibition Centre, 2nd to 3rd March 2013

A massive amount of antique lovers attend the Europuces Fair in Reims. Whether you are a seasoned antique dealer, an enthusiast or a bargain hunter, this is the place to be!

European antique sellers have a range of treasures on sale, from furniture to fine art objects, to apparently ordinary every day items. Come to the treasure trove that is the Europuces Fair.

3. Méli’môme Festival, Place de l’Hotel de Ville, Reims, 22nd March to 8th April 2013

4. Festival Bernard Dimey, May awaiting dates 2013 (10th to 13th May 2012)

A festival dedicated to the memory of Bernard Dimey, the Nogent poet. There are prizes awarded each year from a spring-board event, for the younger talented people.

Born on 16th July 1931 in what was then Nogent-en-Bassigny, and now Nogent, Bernard Dimey was a French poet and songwriter. The festival focuses on poetry and songs with the younger folk in mind. He died in Paris, on 1st July 1981.

5. Sedan Medieval Festival, 3rd week May, (19th to 20th May 2012)

The Sedan Castle Fort was built almost 6 centuries ago and is the largest in Europe, with a size of 35,000m2. Making it a splendid place to enjoy a medieval festival, it is located right in the heart of Sedan city.

The festival takes place both in the castle fortress as well as in the town, and each year the event planners come with a new themed surprise. In 2011 a full size dragon who spat fire was produced and in 2010 came the giants of the north.

Cast yourself back into medieval times and watch the medieval sports and activities take place, such as jousting, flag throwing and cavalry tournaments. Enjoy street theatre, soak up the medieval atmosphere, feast, drink and be merry!

You can also find plenty of beautiful medieval arts and crafts, plus watch medieval artisans at work.

6. Joan of Arc Festival, early June (2nd to 3rd June 2012)

Joan of Arc festival is one of the most historical events which takes place in France. The city of Reims celebrates its heroine.

It is a marvellous sight, as around 2000 people dress up in historical costumes to accompany Charles VII and Joan of Arc, in a parade.

The patron saint of the city, who freed it from the English in the 15th century, is celebrated by a range of shows. If you are British and visiting this festival, you can enjoy some fun French-English rivalry, given the occasion. So take local banter in the good spirits of the occasion!

Wander around the medieval market, enjoying the historical epics that are part and parcel of this festival, as well as the atmosphere and the surroundings.

7. Les Sacres du Folklore – The Rites of Folklore Festival – Reims, 21st to 25th June 2013

This folk festival takes place in the interests of friendship and peace in Reims. You can expect to hear some of world’s best folk groups, and enjoy a folk-filled programme of events. More than three hundred musicans, singers, dancers and actors take part in this large folk festival.

8. Ay Champagne Festival (every 2nd year, 1st weekend July, next year 2014)

Also known as Henry IV Festival

Considered to be the best champagne village in the whole region, Ay is the home of the likes of Bollinger, Gosset and Ayala, as well as Deutz & Gelderman.

This festival combines lots of bubbly champagne and plenty of bubbly entertainment. Consider putting a few days apart in July 2014 for this marvellous event.

9. Clin d’œil Festival, Reims, 5th to 7th July 2013

Running since the European Year of People with Disabilities, 2003, this festival is a huge European deaf cultural event. In fact it actually started off as a one off event, but like a stone gathering moss, it has developed into a superb event that now continues to run.

Here is where you can enjoy experiencing the showcasing of the numerous exceptionally talented deaf people. It is a festival that bridges the gap between the deaf and hearing communities through the medium of artistic expression. A variety of forms of art and creative expression include painting, sculpture, design.

10. Fête des Sorcières – Witch Festival, Chalindrey, October

Whilst today there are many practices witches who live happily in various countries, a few centuries ago they would have been burnt at the stake. During the 16th century the Fort of Cognelot was the area of a witch hunt, and since then it was given the name Devil’s Point. This, as well as the area’s Celtic roots have combined to make it a location rich in supernatural heritage.

The Witch Festival has been running for around a century. Celebrations evoke this heritage and visitors can enjoy dances which are haunting, til the wee and more eerie hours. The festival includes exhibitions, movies of a fitting genre and face painting.

Listen to the local ghost stories, marvel at the beautiful scenery, learn about true roots of witches and of course have lots of fun!

Promotional pricing is typically used when new products are being introduced to the market. It can also be used to stimulate demand for products or services with lagging demand. This strategy of price targets buyers who are looking for the deal.

Some examples of promotional pricing are:

• Special event pricing. Pricing that is 'special' (or lowered) for special events such as Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Super Bowl, Thanksgiving and Back to School.
• Rebate programs . Such as a rebate or allowance when buying a home and the seller offers a move-in allowance, or a carpet replacement or renovation allowance or a rebate for all cash, no financing, and purchases of big ticket items like cars.
• Low or no-interest financing. A number of furniture stores will advertise no-interest financing loans for furniture purchases. Car dealerships also offer these pricing programs – often for last year models. This strategy has been a sales success for a number of industries in the past, be careful how you use it though as consumers are becoming more sensitive to the true value of the strategy.
• Buy One, Get One free or Two for the Price of One . If product costs are low, and price includes a healthy profit margin, this may be a good strategy to use if you have an overabundance of inventory. If a business has a good warranty or return program (good in the sense that there are no, or few, product failures and no, or few, product returns), then it is not a high cost investment for them to offer low cost or no cost warranties. Buyers view these types of promotional prices very positively because they believe it shows that the business has high confidence in the product's performance.

The promotional pricing strategy has been over-used in the retail markets and buyers have developed a healthy skepticism about the reality of the 'deal'. One of the most often used promotional pricing strategies is the "Going Out of Business" sale; the sale seems to last for years and the business eventually just 'goes out of business' at that location but then restarts elsewhere.

Be careful with how you use promotional pricing. There is still room for some effective promotional pricing programs in the business-to-business markets; be smart in how you develop your pricing strategy.

Considered a sumptuary object, Equipale Mexican Furniture is traditional furniture that comes from the Aztec word impala which means seat. Hernan Cortez appointed equipales as seats of honor to dignitaries of the time, as it represented social status. It can be made of leather from pig or cow, and willow, cedar wood or ixtele, a derivative of the cactus. Whatever the combination, they are woven together with natural fibers. Throughout all of Mexico, equipale is considered an important part of Mexican culture.

A little less than an hour away from Guadalajara, is the village of Zacoalco where over three hundred families earn their livelihood from producing these rustic cane and leather chairs. Mexican Equipale are still made in the traditional manner and they can be tanned so that they are made water proof and do not degrade in the heat.

The Equipale is a Mexican chair or table made of wood, leather, maguey fiber and cane. It combines these into a unique, comfortable seat. In the United States, equipales are typically found in Mexican restaurants and are popular in homes of the Southwest. The word “equipale” is from Nautl, the Aztec language, and the chair is occasionally called “Montezuma’s Chair” to try and establish its’ antiquity. The term “billiard” comes from the French word “bille,” meaning “ball,” referring to a ball and stick game, and the word “art,” representing the art of the game. Billiards has been around for many centuries, originating as lawn games in much of the world over 700 years ago. Presently, it is typical to see a pool table in every bar or tavern you walk into. A number of people even have them in their homes, but it was not always like that. When billiards originated, it was played outdoors as early as the thirteenth century, and from there moved indoors onto tables. Wooden sticks called “maces” were used to shove (rather than stroke) the wooden and ivory billiard balls. Maces were eventually modified into cue sticks due to the difficulty of shots near rails with maces.

Many prominent, historical figures have owned billiard tables, and in many countries. Some of these famous people include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, King James I of England, and Kings Louis III, XIV, XV, and XVI of France. It is even recorded that King Louis XI of France purchased a billiard table as early as 1470. Over time, billiards became more popular in bars, inns, and taverns, therefore becoming more commonplace amongst ordinary people. Below is a brief, historical timeline of how the game of billiards was born.

• 13th century:

o 1200s: Bat and ball lawn games are invented and spread quickly

• 15th century:

o 1470: King Louis XI of France buys his own billiard table

o End 1400’s: billiards moved from outside on grass to inside on a table

• 16th century:

o 1500s: “Table billiards” popularity spreads amongst nobility in France and England

• 17th century:

The making of Equipale Mexican Furniture can be traced back to pre-Hispanic times. It is considered a religious type object and it represents social status.

Uniquely, Mexican Equipales Furniture is still made in the traditional way. They are still made with ‘palo de la rosa’ the same as the original equipales. The wood is cut on a full moon because it is believed that the wood is the hardest then. Equipales furniture is made with leather, wood and “ixtle” a derivative of the cactus.

Families have made Equipales since Hueman, the Aztec shamon taught the ‘Equipalera’ technique of the Gods to the early settlers. Today Equipales link the mythical past to a modern cultural icon.

Traditionally the frame of the equipal is joined with ixtle, a type of vegetal fiber removed from the maguey cactus. The seat is also tied with this fiber. The procedure to prepare and to spin ixtle was learned from their ancestors: is extracted with cazanga, washed, dried, barabilla and spun. Reeds and leather are attached on the maguey fiver. Pigskin is usually favored because it is porous and allows the air to circulate.

Equipal Furniture made from leather can last up to twenty years or more:

• The structure begins with a lattice of crossed splints. These are lashed top and bottom to bent wood pieces. This basic form makes the chair light but flexible and able to stand up to tough use. The wood splints are traditionally split out, but are now cut out with a band-saw; less waste this way. Blanks for the splints are made and shaped with a machete and paring knife into pointed slats with notches at either end for lashings
• The base is a thin (3/8″ x 3″) piece of bent wood shaped to form an “O” or a “D” shape
• The seat frame is the same shape but of bent willow. The splints are crossed over one another and lashed top and bottom with twine
• These lashings are cemented with a black adhesive that used to be a plant gum but in modern day may be asphalt or even spray. The seat has three layers. The first is made with a random weaving of maguey fiber looped around the bentwood seat frame. Over this is placed a plaited seat of cane that has been flattened. On top of these, a piece of soaked leather is stretched and stitched or stapled to the bentwood seat rim
  • The back is made by lashing willow poles to the seat frame and bending willow pieces over the supports for a continuous arm and backrest. Another piece of leather is stretched around this back and over the arms and stitched or stapled
  • Once dried, the leather stretches firmly over the the hole, giving it an inviting and comfortable look, in contrast to the rougher wood splints below. In the higher priced-chairs the seat and back are packed with foam to give the chair an upholstered look and feel
  • The real skill comes in the assembling, lashing and nailing the parts.

This most elaborate construction is made with only the simplest tools, a machete, a knife and a hammer. There are new versions as the Mexican designers and makers are working hard to accommodate every taste in Equipale Mexican furniture.
