For those of us who like singing, one goal is to sing in front of an audience and show off our talents.

But just because you are a good singer, it does not mean that you know how to sing in front of an audience.

Even though I love to sing and make singing a part of my everyday, I do sometimes get a bit nervous when I am singing by myself in front of other people.

Growing up, I sang in the school choir and found this to be fun and every time I would perform with the choir, I would get a thrill and instant rush. But singing in a choir is different from singing by yourself.

The first time I sang in front of an audience, was when my family was having dinner with some family friends. The restaurant that we went to was a karaoke restaurant and anyone could get up and have a go singing.

Before I went on stage, I was extremely nervous and my hands were shaking. But I managed to sing alright. At least the audience clapped for me!

I found that the main thing that you need to overcome when you sing in front of people is your nerves. Confide in one person, either a good friend or loyal relative and tell them that you want to sing in front of an audience. Tell that friend or relative to be honest with you and ask for their honest opinion about whether you can pull off a song in front of people. If they are honest, then if you don’t have the best of voices, then they will tell you that and maybe you might be best not to sing in front of an audience until you improve.

But if they say that you are a good singer, then you are ready to get up on that stage.

So following are some tips that will teach you how to sing in front of an audience.

1) Take any opportunity to practice in front of an audience.

I would suggest that you take your close friends or relatives to a karaoke singing club. For those of you who have never been to a karaoke club before, a karaoke club basically has a number of rooms and in each room there is a TV and comfortable lounge chairs. You book in your time and are given a room and booklets of song lists. You choose your song that you want to sing to and using the remote, just like a TV, you choose the song that you want to sing to. Then the song will come up on the screen with a video of the song and at the bottom of the screen are the lyrics. As the lyrics pass, the writing changes colour so that you know what you are singing to.

When I was in university, I remember going to karaoke clubs often and we would book a room and my friends and I would have a great time singing the night away.

By singing in front of people who you are familiar first, you are building up your self-confidence and this will help you to sing in front of an audience. After you have started to feel comfortable singing in front of your close friends or relatives, your next step is to sing in front of a live audience.

2) Prepare before you go on stage.

By preparing, you will need to clear your mind of all distractions and just envisage yourself nailing your song. You will need to overcome your nerves in order for you to sing nicely. Before you are due up on stage, drink some warm water to relax your throat. Then close your eyes and take some deep breathes. Inhale in for five seconds and then exhale for another five seconds. Do this for about one minute and this kind of meditation will help you to relax. Imagine yourself on that stage with the audience clapping for you and you will begin to feel happy and confident. Then do some light vocal exercises, like scales. This will help to warm up your voice.

3) Choose an appropriate song

When you are singing on stage in front of people, I suggest that you choose a song that is easy to sing and that is not vocally challenging. Most likely, you will have some nerves so you don’t want to make yourself even more nervous that you miss a note when you sing in front of the audience.

A song that you find easy to sing will come naturally to you so you needn’t worry about hitting the notes.

Wear nice but loose clothing so that you will not feel restricted by a tight collar or a tight waistline.

The best thing about singing in front of an audience is that it will increase your confidence and will you give you more experience singing in front of people. You might still get the jitters every time you get up on stage but after a few times, you will get used to it. The first time is always the hardest but after that, you will be able to sing confidently. The more experience you have of singing in front of an audience, then the more confidence you will have.

Motivating EFL Learners Using Drama

Motivating our English as a foreign language learners is a constant concern among most EFL teachers. Learners may also be limited English proficiency (LEP) or reluctant due to other intrinsic or extrinsic motivational factors. You might be in need of new techniques for teaching English grammar, verbs or structure in context. Then too, EFL teachers may simply be seeking additional ways to incorporate dynamics into their English language teaching. Whatever the case may be, the addition of drama and dramatic elements is often an enthusiastically welcomed one. In preparation, here are some suggested useful props and materials that will aid in the inclusion of dramas in the EFL class room.

Key Props You Should Have on Hand

Furniture:

Some useful items for simulating a restaurant, café, store or small shop setting include a small table, two to four chairs, a tablecloth, place settings some throw pillows, a throw rug, and an assortment of tableware. For tableware consider plastic tumblers, cups, plates, flatware, cookware, napkins and containers for condiments.

Character Clothing:

To help learners get into character for dramatizations, dialogues and role plays a selection of jackets, smocks, aprons, hats, caps (baseball cap, uniform cap, etc.), masks-to have “Batman” do passive voice, and wigs (in a variety of colors) are easily acquired. Consider additional items such as neckties, boots, scarf, handkerchiefs, bandanas and gloves too.

Noise-Makers:

EFL learners of all ages love to put these into play during dramatic scenes of many different types. All manner of bells, chimes, whistles flutes, rattles and whatever other realia you might be able to come up with will add to your variety of imaginative props.

Toys and Playthings:

These toys and playthings I rather like myself because they can be utilized in a vast array of English as a foreign language class activities, in addition to drama and dialogues usage. Try an assortment of items such as: balloons, dolls, stuffed animals, marbles, jacks, decks of playing cards, an inflatable ball (like a beach ball), a smaller rubber ball, baseball or soccer ball, a pair of dice, some popular board games, a set of checkers, some dominoes, and a chess set.

Settings Accessories:

For simulating settings try props like ashtrays, timers, an hourglass, bags in assorted sizes, a very dull razor, shave cream, an egg timer, spray bottles, and a free-standing clock. Likely you’ll already have assorted books, paper, pens, rulers, scissors and other stationery items on hand in the class room to fill out this assortment of props.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Certainly, you won’t need to have all of these items on hand. Whatever is available and suits the conditions under which you teach will drive which of these things you’ll ultimately work with. Your learners will undoubtedly have many other suggestions too. Just remember to allow them free or “unguided” practice with the English language in context, performing dialogues, dramas, skits and role plays, have fun with it and above all enjoy the results.

The old saying “use it or lose it” can be applied to nearly anything, and when it comes to penis function and overall health, it is especially true. Making these exercises part of the daily penis care routine requires only a few minutes each day, and almost any man can do them.

• Kegels – Exercising the pelvic floor muscles can provide significant benefits when it comes to sexual health and penile function. These muscles provide support for the penis during erections, and especially for the thrusting aspect of partner play. Either through masturbation or intercourse, a man should bring himself nearly, but not quite, to the point of orgasm, and then squeeze the end of the penis and relax. Repeat until the time just feels right, and then let it go. This can help men to gain some control over their climaxes, not to mention making them feel more intense.
• Thrusting power – The final exercise does not directly involve the penis itself; instead, it is designed to give a man some extra thrusting power, as well as stamina. This means strengthening the core muscles – those that support the back and abdomen. This is performed by lying face-down on the floor, and then raising the entire body up on the elbows and toes, with the back held straight – a bit like a push-up, except the elbows and forearms are supporting the upper body. This position should be held for at least 30 seconds. Repeat three times.

There were 4 days at sea along with two days at port; making stops in the Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico. Before booking the trip, I checked out reviews on Cruise Critic. Of the 442 reviews this boat has, 75% were positive. Here are some highlights of my experience on the ship.

Food: The food was plentiful (as expected) and tasty. The buffet was very good and the evening dining hall had a good variety of food. We had a table for four all to ourselves the entire week, so that was a treat! “After hours” there is a 24 hour pizza bar and ice-cream station, and the room service was quick. I wouldn’t classify this ship as a culinary dream, but it certainly was ample.

Drinks: The wait staff were very attentive and it was never a long wait to get a drink. As expected, the drinks were expensive. But if you stick to lemonade, water, tea, juice, etc, you don’t need to spend extra to stay hydrated. If you’re planning on drinking a lot, you might want to get one of their drink packages. You can save on cocktails, wine, and soda by purchasing these. There are a lot of rules and fine print, so read up before you go.

Pools: I was not impressed by the swimming pools on the ship. There is one main pool with a water slide going into it, which eats up some of the space. There were also a few whirlpool-sized swimming pools (with cool water) but not of the size for actual swimming.

Deck Space: There were always plenty of lounge chairs available on deck. They didn’t seem to have the usual “reserved chair” issues that many ships have. As the week went by, I think more people were hanging out inside so there were even more chairs available.

Rooms: We had an ocean view room with two twin size beds converted to a king size. The noise from the ship was at reasonable levels and besides some noisy neighbors a couple of nights, there were no noise issues. The bathroom was sufficient and overall there were no issues with the room.

Entertainment: Admittedly this trip was more about relaxing than it was the nightlife. But we did take in a few song and dance shows. While the theater is smaller than a lot of other boats, the entertainers were very talented and the shows were great. We also took in a few comedy shows, which were awesome. Just make sure that you’re leaving the kids at home if you’re going to an adults-only show. They aren’t kidding when they say they’re not family friendly!

Time at Port: The time at port in the Grand Cayman was short. We paid $5 per person to take a shuttle to the nearby public beach. The water was warm, clear, and refreshing. Drinks nearby cost a fortune, so be prepared.

We were in Cozumel, Mexico for about 8 hours. We arranged an excursion through Carnival to go to a nearby all-inclusive, Chankanaab Resort. There they had snorkeling, a Mayan tour, sea-lion show, lots of lounge chairs on the beach, and a swim up bar. Even though this was a self-guided day at the resort, they insisted on giving you an hour-long tour of the place and organizing all sorts of group activities. The guide seemed more concerned with occupying you so you didn’t spend too much time at the bar. The resort itself was great, but I’d opt out of this next time.

Overall, I think the Carnival Paradise was a great value for the money. Coming up soon will be a post about the travel gadgets you must have on your next cruise!

It’s generally accepted these days that we need exercise to stay healthy, yet with all the labor saving equipment we have, getting exercise is often difficult. Joining a gym can be expensive and, besides, adding the time to get there, change, and shower can take a big slice out of your evening. Running or jogging is much cheaper and so easy to put off in bad weather. The pounding on hard surfaces, if your running technique is not good, can also cause physical problems.

Of course, if you have arthritis or any other seriously debilitating disease, then these sorts of exercise are a complete no no. For you, there is the rocking chair. They cost as little as £50 or $75, so most people should be able to afford one. Although I haven’t managed to find the original source, I have read that studies have been held at the Medical College of Virginia, that showed that using a rocking chair sets up a natural rhythm that activates the body’s natural ability to repair and recover. You should start with up to an hour per day for the first week, then increase the time by ten minutes per day per week for several weeks. It has cured colds, ‘flu, diabetes and even some types of cancer. (From an item by Beatrice Dexter in the Examiner (USA; 7/7/92)) This motion has also been shown to help calm distressed dementia patients at a Rochester USA nursing home.

For more active people, the simplest and best forms of exercise are skipping and rebounding. You’ve probably seen clips of boxers skipping for long periods and I admire them, for I cannot keep going for more than ten minutes. However, this is the very cheapest way of getting exercise, as a skipping rope can cost as little as £5 or $7. I prefer a real rope one, which is more expensive. Amazon carries 233 different sorts. I hadn’t realized you could get leather ones!

If you find skipping difficult, the next cheapest form of exercise is using a mini trampoline or rebounder. These cost anything from £20 or $30 to £100 or $150. People who use a mini trampoline or rebounder are said to be among the very fittest. Even NASA endorses this type of exercise. (Journal of Applied Physiology 49(5): 881-887, 1980). Rebounding exercises your arms, legs, abdominal muscles, heart and lungs. You will find that your body will be better toned and you will be able to keep going for longer and longer periods. This is a zero-impact exercise, which means that, although you are obtaining all the advantages of running, you will not be having to absorb the shock waves that would be damaging to your muscles and joints ( Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation 10: 401 – 408, 1990).

You can easily fit a mini trampoline or rebounder into your normal routine, because every minute you spend rebounding is the equivalent to about three or four minutes of running. This means also that you get to the point of burning fat much faster than you will if you are running. You can use a mini trampoline or rebounder while you watch the television or listen to your music: inside or outside, depending on the weather. As you can use a mini trampoline or rebounder inside and it takes up little room, you can use it in all weathers.

If you take up rebounding, you will find that your circulation will improve and your heart and lung capacities will increase. Your co-ordination and balance will be better and your muscles will be well toned, giving you a slimmer figure, even before your weight is affected. If you are exercising to lose weight, you should be aware that, because muscle is heavier than fat, you are likely to put on a bit of weight, or not lose any to start with. For this reason, it is a good idea not only to weigh yourself before you start, but also to measure your waist, hips, chest, thighs, upper arms, et cetera.
