Many a new mother has asked me about newborn bowel habits. In fact, it is probably the # 1 question I am asked, bar none. I frequently get frantic calls from new mothers whose baby has not had a bowel movement for 24 hours. So, let’s talk poop!!

Newborns have bowel movements that vary in behavior. The first few days, they are ridding their colon of a black, sticky substance called meconium. This is very normal. This is the substance that fills their intestines while they are in the womb. It is hard to clean up, and it does not rub off easily. After the first couple of days, you should see what we call “transitional stools”, which are still dark in color, but are slowly becoming looser, easier to wipe off their little bottoms and maybe with a few yellow seeds in them. These can vary in color from very dark brown, to green and may have spots of yellow in them.

From this point (approximately 4-7 days after birth), you will start to see progressively more yellow and looser stools. Now, these can also be on the green side, depending on what the baby is taking in. If you are breastfeeding, your diet can have something to do with this. If the infant is on vitamins of any sort, or iron supplements, the poops can be much darker in nature. But, they should be fairly loose and easy to clean up. If you are breastfeeding, this trend will continue. Stools will be loose, yellow/greenish and usually in the first few weeks, very frequent. They can also be very explosive!!!

When my son was a newborn, I was changing his diaper on the changing table and reached on the right side of the table to get a new diaper. As my head came up, I saw a flash of something go right before my eyes and then saw the “splat” on the dresser right next to me. I looked in wonder at how this small creature could produce anything with that much force behind it. Whew!! Just missed my head too!!

It actually is not that much force exerted, it has a lot to do with the small area it is shot out of. My point in all of this is to say that this is all very NORMAL. What mother has not experienced this or something like it, or the occasional “up the back” poop that boggles your mind?

If you are continuing to breastfeed, you will also notice that as your baby goes through growth spurts, he can go from pooping every time you feed him, to not having a bowel movement for 2-3 days. Again, very normal. Breast milk is very well utilized by their little bodies and in a big growth spurt, just gets down right used up. Nothing is left to eliminate. So, if you are used to changing a dirty diaper every time you feed your little tot, don’t fret when that changes. All babies go through growth spurts. Their bowel habits are ever changing. It is highly unusual for a breast fed baby to be constipated.

If you are bottle-feeding and using formula, their stools could be a little more solid. Usually they are what I call “silly putty poops”. This may be dating myself, but that’s what it looks like. The more solid consistency is due to the way they digest formula differently than breast milk. Again, it is very normal. Bottle fed babies can also have varying degrees of regularity. This is also due to the baby’s growth spurts.

So, you ask, “When do I worry”? Most doctors will not even bat an eye if you tell them your little bundle of joy has not pooped for 2-3 days. It is usually nothing to worry about. We do not call it constipation unless the actual stools look like little solid pebbles. Then, there is some intervening that can be done. Try a warm bath and moving baby’s legs like she is riding a bicycle. This sometimes helps to relax the muscles. Talk to your pediatrician if the baby seems very uncomfortable for long periods of time or it has gone beyond 3-4 days. There are a multitude of remedies out there; most of them from your own kitchen. But, every pediatrician has different opinions on this, so best to talk to yours.

If the stools are soft or loose, but infrequent, don’t worry. Your baby is most likely just growing. Call your pediatrician if:

1. It has been beyond 3-4 days,

2. Your baby appears very uncomfortable for a good part of the day

3. You see blood in the stool when she does go

4. The stools are hard, small pebbles

It is very rare, but there are some conditions that may warrant medical attention.

Babies have only, eating, sleeping and pooping to concentrate on, so their attention is fully on the “task at hand”. Their intense concentration can sometimes be misconstrued as discomfort, but wait it out. They will be back to their normal angelic looking self in no time. Babies systems are very efficient. They usually run easily on auto-pilot. Just relax and enjoy the moment. Someday you may write about it or tell stories at parties and embarrass your own grown child.

There is no such thing as a typical Indian wedding. Surprised? That’s because in this land of diverse languages and traditions, wedding customs are equally varied.

Here’s a look at how people residing in the eastern and western regions of India celebrate weddings.

Eastern Indian marriages

Eastern Indian wedding ceremonies are not as opulent and extravagant as their North Indian counterparts but are equally elaborate in their own way. There are scores of simple but meaningful rituals, many of them very interesting and actually rooted in ancient logic and reasoning. Weddings in India are also an occasion where long-lost close friends and relatives bond and share memorable moments during this happy occasion.

The most striking feature of a Bengali wedding, however, is the fact that the groom’s mother does not attend the wedding! She awaits the happy couple at home, ready to perform all the welcoming rituals.

A typical East Indian groom is traditionally clad in dhoti and kurta, and he carries a mirror all the time right till wedding ceremony is over. The groom’s party is accorded a welcome with fresh flowers and much blowing of conches by the womenfolk. Rosewater is sprinkled on him and then both, the bride and the groom get ready for the actual nuptials. The bride is beautifully dressed in a heavy red Benarasi saree and wears a kind of a crown like a princess. She has sandalwood paste decorations on her forehead and face

As a part of the wedding ritual, the bride has to sit on a low wooden stool called pidi that is lifted by her brothers. The bride is then taken around the groom seven times in circles by her brothers, signifying their eternal union. Interestingly, all along she shields her eyes from the groom with a betel leaf. The bride then proceeds to sit on a highly decorated pidi (low wooden stools), similar to the one on which the groom is seated, all through the chanting of the priest. The women folk gathered blow conch shells to mark this highly auspicious moment.

This is followed by the exchange of flower garlands between the bride and groom, to the accompaniment of the chanting if scared mantras (Sanskrit verses). The bride and groom again take seven steps around the sacred fire. The groom then applies vermilion onto his bride’s head, the symbol of a married woman. After this, the bride is handed over to the groom by her maternal or paternal uncle.

The newlyweds reach the groom’s home where more rituals and ceremonies follow. Hiding the rings of the bride and groom, playing with a vessel full of rice are some of the wedding games to make the new bride feel at home.

Interestingly, the married couple has to stay separately that night and it is only the next night, after all the rituals have finally been completed that they can enjoy conjugal bliss!

West Indian marriages

Western Indian weddings, especially Maharashtrian weddings, usually take place in the morning. Prior to this, the engagement ceremony, known as Sakhar Puda (exchanging of a sugar packet) takes place to formally declare the betrothal.

In the morning, a puja is conducted to worship Lord Ganesh (the elephant-headed God of prosperity). The groom’s family arrives in the morning at either the bride’s residence or the mandap and is treated to a lavish breakfast.

After this, as per the auspicious time already set in consultation with various astrological almanacs, the girl’s maternal uncle escorts her to the Mandap (marriage hall). Tradition dictates that the girl and boy do not see each other while the Antarpaat ceremony takes place. In this a silk partition (Antarpaat) is placed between them. Then the shlokas are chanted by the priest after which Antarpaat is removed. The friends and relatives gathered shower unbroken rice on the couple as an auspicious sign. The bride and the groom then exchange flower garlands and take the Seven Steps (Saat Pheras) around the ceremonial holy fire.

After the marriage ceremony, another puja, known as Laxmi Narayan puja, is held, in which the bride and groom are symbolically worshipped as Goddess Lakshmi (the Goddess of Wealth) and Lord Narayan, respectively. Like in all Indian weddings, the girl is then formally ‘handed over’ to the groom by her father or maternal uncle. This ceremony is known as Kanya Daan all across India.

Gujarati wedding ceremonies also begin by offering prayers to Lord Ganesha and seeking his blessings. Traditionally, the bride and the groom exchange Jaimala or flower garlands twice. The first time round, the groom is made to sit on a higher platform than the bride, symbolizing that the bride has not broken his ties with his friends and family. The second time, they are at an equal level. In what is known as the Madhuparka ceremony, the groom’s feet are washed and he is plied with honey and milk. Even as this ceremony is in progress, the bride’s sisters and cousins attempt to steal the groom’s shoes, a tradition that is followed in almost all the Indian marriages. There is much laughter and good-natured teasing. The groom has to ‘bribe’ these girls with handsome financial benefits in order to get his footwear back!

Then comes the tying of the groom’s shawl to the bride’s sari, readying them to take the customary Seven Steps around the sacred fire – the central part of all Indian weddings. The couple walks seven times around the sacred fire, taking their seven vows, to the accompaniment of the mantras being chanted by the presiding priest. Formally married, the couple seeks the blessings of their parents and other elders. This concludes the wedding which is followed by a grand and lavish reception party.

Traditions and customs form the backbone of an Indian wedding. It is rich, colourful and vibrant, hiding a wealth of meaning in its many interesting and, sometimes perplexing, customs that have their roots in its ancient heritage.

When one thinks of billiard games, most think of more typical games like 8-Ball, 9-Ball or Straight Pool. But actually, the possibilities are nearly endless. Hundreds of games exist, many even with multiple variations of themselves. Even still, those who spend an adequate amount of time in their billiard or rec rooms know that regardless of how many games there are, games might become a bit dull or monotonous at times. There are many ways to spice up existing games, some of which are described below.

Assessing or adding points to any billiard game always makes it more interesting, although many games exist that already incorporate points into game play. For example, players could modify a normal game of 8-Ball by assessing points to the player with balls left on the table. Keep playing over and over until a predetermined point total has been reached by one player or another (50-100 points is average). In this particular case, the person with the lowest amount of points is the winner, as in golf. Scoring more points in this scenario means you are leaving more balls on the table than your opponents – usually a no-no in billiard games. And points can be spread out in a number of ways, such as one point per ball, negative points, or giving each ball points totaling their face values. Extra points can even be handed out for bank shots, combos, rail shots or leaves, as well.

Making a small wager on any billiard game is another time-tested method to make any match more exciting and competitive, yet it keeps the game on a friendly level. And just as in any other sport, billiard games can be bet on in a number of ways, like wagering a dollar per ball left on the table, a straight-up, predetermined amount, or a double elimination tournament with a prize purse for first, second and third places.

If you are not a betting individual or points do not interest you, try eliminating certain shots to make your billiard game more challenging. For instance, only allow bank or masse shots instead of straight ones. Or make combination shots the only way to sink a ball, having no contact between the cue and object balls. Or just use certain pockets, like the two sides; or pick two corners. Anything sunk in a nondesignated pocket gets spotted by your opponent anywhere on the table.

There is usually no end to inventing new ways to liven up any billiard game. Try a few of these methods next time you become bored with your games. Perhaps these ideas will also help you branch off and come up with even more ideas to utilize in future billiard games.
