A electric wheelchair (power wheelchair) gives a kind of welcome mobility to its users, particularly to people who are physically challenged. With the use of a wheelchair, a person can enjoy and maybe even participate in events or activities with family, friends and colleagues, which may be particularly difficult to do without aid. This can be something deceptively simple like going for long walks and even hiking on accessible trails. A person who uses an electric wheelchair can also lounge in parks, or even do usual chores like grocery shopping, with relative ease. Because it doesn’t need a lot of human physical effort, using it is convenient and allows for more freedom.

Here are some interesting facts about the electric wheelchair:

History. The first electric wheelchair was actually invented by George Klein. He came up with this idea during World War II because he wanted to help the veterans who were severely injured in the war.

Function. Modern versions of an electric wheelchair are designed with different features. Some models may have seats that tilt to help its user when getting up. Others, meanwhile, have reclining capability and even a seat and leg elevation.

Seating. An electric wheelchair can have two different seating styles. It can either be a sling seat, which is something that may look similar with traditional wheelchairs; or it can also be captain’s chairs, which resembles the automobile seats.

Size. You won’t likely run out of choices when choosing from the different types of electric wheelchairs available, because there is bound to be one for just about every need and occasion you can think of. You can opt to get one of those folding and compact models, which is great particularly when you’re traveling; or settle for one of the larger ones which is more comfortable.

Control. Many of the power wheelchairs available are navigated or controlled with the use of a joystick. But if the user can’t use the normal controls for some reason, there are alternative options to look into, like chin controls and puff or sip scanner. This scanner is actually a tube placed next to the mouth so that the person can blow into it. Check the model you’re planning to buy if it has alternative controls.
