Introduction

The CDC (Centers for Disease Prevention and Control) indicates in recent posts that “Each year, millions of older people-those 65 and older-fall”. These falls can often be serious and there are strong indications that for seniors or those recovering or those with disabilities each successive fall increases the probability of an additional fall. In fact, also according to the CDC, there were 9.6 Million non-fatal injuries in the senior population due to falls, in the year 2015. An additional 33 thousand were fatal in that same year. (Go to the cdc.gov site for sources). These facts are clearly sobering but even more concerning since so many of these falls take place at home and could easily be prevented.

Contributing Factors to Home-based Falls

Seniors and others that have lost some level of independence face many challenges in the home, some intrinsic and others extrinsic, some related to home safety and some, surprisingly, related to caregivers. Here are some common factors that we all need to keep in mind:

• Loss of full motor control
• Medications that cause drowsiness and or dizziness
• Home-safety issues that increase the dangers of mobility
• Improper support devices to aid mobility
• Lack of ongoing, appropriately paced physical activity

Of all of these clearly the easiest to eliminate or mitigate fall into a single category above: Home-Safety issues. This is probably the most critical of all of these since the elimination of any items in this category is likely to profoundly and significantly reduce the risk of falls in the home.

Caregivers and Their Role in Home Safety

Family caregivers or hired caregivers, for seniors and others, need to be acutely aware of fall-risk dangers in the home and help those in need of assistance avoid these dangers. Caregivers need to be proactive by ensuring the safety of those they care for through awareness, communication and correction of hidden and/or obvious home dangers. This can be accomplished through vigilance and involvement. For example caregivers should try to put themselves into the shoes of those they care for and predetermine what challenges they face in and around the home. It is challenging enough for those in need of care to merely accept their position of aging, disability or otherwise, and therefore caregivers need to be sensitive to the feelings of seniors and others while still be vigilant in keeping the home safe. Caregivers really do need to behave as unsung heroes or angels, operating in the background, and without making seniors or others in care feel worse for their loss of some independence.

Risk Mitigation and Steps to Safety

The CDC as well as other sources provide significant yet intuitive advice on how to minimize the risk of fall and injury. In fact the National Council of safety provides some excellent direction in its recent article “Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention will Keep Older Adults Safe and Independent” ( click here for source). Most of us can leverage a little thought on this topic and easily come up with a checklist of items to evaluate in our homes to make them safer for older adults, those recovering, or disabled. Provided below is a good start and may give you some additional thought and guidance. Please note that naturally, this is offered as a suggestion and not medical advice.

Kitchen Safety

• Cooking Equipment, Utensils, Dishes, Glasses and Food should be stored appropriately and easy to reach
• No kind of throw rug or similar placed on a kitchen floor
• Floors should always be free of any kind of spills (Oils, food, etc)
• Use counter-top toasters where feasible, making them easily accessible
• Where higher cabinets must be accessed a step stool with a handrail is should be easily accessible
• Non-skid floor cleaners only for cleaning the floor

General Concerns with Carpeting

• Wall-to-Wall carpeting should be completely and properly installed – no loose edges, tears, buckles or holes
• While not always possible, solid colors are better in that they provide greater consistency for those that are mobility challenged – they also show edges more cleaning
• Deep Piles and Shag styled carpets should be avoided

Bathroom Concerns and Safety

• Ensure that bathroom mats are slip-resistant (and not old wherein the slip-resistance has worn) – ensure they are placed near the showering/bathing area
• Ensure that there are mirrors at various levels to ensure that the client is not struggling or reaching to use a mirror
• Where possible install grab bars near the toilet, bathtub and/or shower
• The bathtub/shower floor should be non-skid, if this is not the case then ensure that non-skid safety strips are installed
• Where feasible use a soap dispenser mounted in a very accessible area in the Shower/Bath
• Where required, a shower chair is placed in the bathing area
• The toilet seat should be the raised type or a toilet seat with armrests should be fitted to the toilet to ensure safe balance when sitting or getting up from the toilet

Bedroom Safety

• Key safety items should be within reach of the bed, for example on the night table. Consider safe lamp, flashlight, phone, cane, etc.
• If appropriate, a raised height mattress to help with getting into/out of bed
• The floor, particularly around the bed, should be free of clutter, papers and any other items
• Nightlights are appropriately placed in the bedroom and along any routes to the bathroom

Outdoors and Around House/Apartment

• This category naturally only applies in some cases
• Ensure all walkways are clear of debris, branches, leaves, rocks and similar
• Ensure all stones and masonry are solid not loose in anyway
• Ensure all walkways and driveways are as level as possible
• Ensure that all walkways are clean and not coated with moss, algae, Oil and/or other slippery substances

General Living Space Concerns

• In areas that could be classified as pathways ensure that low furniture items are moved aside. Examples include coffee tables, folding end tables, ottomans, floor plants, etc
• Light switches are all in working order and not obstructed
• No Loose Rugs or throw rugs that can slide
• Rooms and moving space are clear of furniture obstructions
• Where applicable use sound activated lamps
• Where applicable use glow-in-the dark markers on various items that require manipulation, for example cabinet handles, light switches, etc
• All electrical cords for power, data, phone, etc are properly routed and secured and not anywhere near pathways or living spaces
• All furniture in proper condition, sturdy and secure
• Several cordless phones available, each marked with glow in the dark markers, and ensure that they can be located audibly (i.e. have a locate handset feature)
• No loose tiles or floorboards
• Night Lights appropriately placed throughout the house
• Infrared sensor lights in certain areas where brighter light is required at night

Technological Considerations

• Install carbon monoxide detectors were appropriate
• Install smoke detectors were appropriate
• If required, based on level of independence, arrange for medical alert device/subscription
• Install detectors that also have emergency lights and/or install motion detected lighting where appropriate

When you are trying to make your own bar stool cushions at home, the first thing that you should consider is that you need the right measurement in terms of shape and size. So, take a paper and cut a pattern that fits perfectly to the bar stool. Keep on trimming the edges until you get the right shape. Make sure you are taking the pattern of the outside edge of the seat. The bar stool cushions will have ruffles that would drape over the edges of the chair seat. Now, take the fabric and cut around the pattern while keeping the extra half inch you will need for seaming. When you are cutting fabric for ruffle, make sure they are cut 7 inches wide and the length should be two times the distance of three exposed sides of the cushion.

Now, take the ruffle fabric and fold the wrong sides together. This will halve the width while the length will remain the same. Now, run basting stitches along cut edges of the ruffle. You can also use the ruffling attachment. This will ensure the gathering cover all the three sides of the cushion and keep in mind that you can stitch a narrow hem at the end of each ruffle. You can cut four fabric pieces of 6 by 3 inches measurement and make ties with them. For that, you have to fold the long edges under half inch and press. Fold this end and press it further and then fold in half and stitch along the long edge.

A section of the seat fabric must be right side up and attach the ruffle to seat with pin. Keep the other side of seat on right side down. Now, stitch around the edges of the fabric while keeping the back of the cushion open for further stuffing. Turn right side out the cushion and press. To finish up your bar stool cushions, fill them up with polyester. However, if you feel the entire process to be too complicated, you can buy these cushions from $ 15 to $50 and more.

The idea is that your sense of taste is amplified when other senses are not being stimulated. You’ll start your night off in the lit bar, where you’ll order your meal. Even in this lit area, cell phones, flashlights, and all other sources of light are prohibited. You’ll then be led by waiters to the pitch black dining room, where you’ll enjoy a two-hour seated meal with servers explaining where everything is located on the table.

This two-part article will guide you to the interesting things that are about to happen in Rio de Janeiro this June. Let’s kick things off with a monthly that will be organized on 4th of the month.

Feira do Rio Antigo is organized monthly in Rio, where the Rua do Lavradio is transformed into an antiques market. Next up, on June 5th is the Feira Hippie, organized weekly. This Hippie market takes place every Sunday in the Praca General Osorio in Ipanema. In Rio next month, you can enjoy the June Festival, which is an integral part of the Brazilian culture, where you can see children (along with many adults) in country-style lumberjack shirts, pigtails, straw hats and painted freckles. In addition, you can also see many interesting folkloric games and dancing alongside bonfires and fireworks throughout the entire city.

Another annual event that will be organized this June is the Good Food in Rio Festival, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy the country’s varied regional cuisine. Here, the participating restaurants will open up their kitchens to chefs from all over Brazil, and there will be lots of lip-smacking events all over Rio.

If you have never been to a gothic palace, it is highly recommended that you should go and see the Ilha Fiscal Palace, built in 1889 at the request of the king. It is inevitable that the speaker who does a lot of presentations across a wide range of audiences will, at some stage or another, find himself unexpectedly having to present to an audience without a microphone. Today, the use of the microphone is commonplace and I’ve already written about microphones as a subject. But what we need to know is what to do when that instrument is not provided? – or what to do if it fails and cannot be fixed. The answer to these two questions depends entirely on the circumstances. I will describe a few of them below.

There are times when no matter how much the program organizer pleads, if you are sensible – remembering that your voice is your most important ‘tool of trade,’ you should refuse to go on. Such a situation happens but rarely. I’ve grumbled at lot, but refused only once, and at that time, after a lengthy delay – which had lots of people embarrassed – a workable microphone did eventually arrive. Quite likely somebody had to drive somewhere to obtain it. It seemed to take that long.

I had no option. It was a big meeting in a big hall and in another hall right behind it there was a very rowdy children’s Christmas party going on!

Okay, that rarity out of the way, what other time is it advisable to refuse to present without a microphone? In a word, ‘Outside.’ I’m talking about outside in the open air to a large audience. When you’re outside in a park, for example, and you’re asked to speak to a lot of people for a long time, just don’t do it. Chances are you’ll give your voice a terrible beating. It could be hoarse and sore for days. Yes, even if you’re very experienced and have mastered voice projection. You see, without something to rebound against, your voice will be projecting mainly into thin air. A lot will be lost to the sky. You message will attenuate in proportion to distance and, with no reflective surfaces, it is likely that only those within forty or fifty feet of you will hear you clearly enough to know what you’re saying. And, you need to remember that sounds are coming in towards you from ‘the world out there’ which those listeners also have to contend with.

Yes, I have tried speaking in the so-called, soapbox, situation with people passing by along public pathways through an inner city park. Some did stop for a while; many just cocked a hand to an ear and kept walking. Others simply walked by as if I wasn’t there. You might infer from this that my speech was no good or badly delivered. Not, so, it was the same presentation that many an audience has lauded to high heaven “as one of the best I’ve ever heard.” It wasn’t the content. It was the environment. So don’t speak outside without a microphone. Unless, of course…

The Ancient Greeks and Romans had the right idea. Three thousand years before the advent of microphones they had invented, developed and built the amphitheater. Oval or circular or half-circles on stone steps, each flint-hard seat rising above the other, the speaker standing at the bottom and centre of this circle, his voice projecting and being reflected from a wall of hard rock all round. These were outdoor auditoriums built for naked voice projection.

There are modern amphitheatres, of course. Usually sound systems are provided in such, but if they’re not working or not available – provided the area is not too large – the ‘naked voice’ will do the job. But in most instances as a speaker without a microphone, you’ll not be in an amphitheater. They’re not that common. So here are a few generalities about most venues, their advantages and shortcomings.

Room size. First thing to consider: the size of the room. Bigger the room the more you’ll need the ability to project powerfully. Where you stand in relation to the audience needs to be considered here. In a rectangular room it is sometimes advisable to stand with your back towards one of the longer walls. This could well put you closer to the audience overall. The more equidistant you are to each listener the better. Usually, though, you have no option, the chairs and podium area have already been set up.

Shape of the room is important. Most rooms are square or rectangular but not all.

Ceiling height. The higher the ceiling, the more easily the sound is lost to the audience below. Also be aware of speaking beneath a dome. I’ve been trapped that way. You can hear the reverberation or echo of your own voice coming back to you – very disconcerting. Never stand with a small-domed ceiling directly overhead whilst speaking into the rest of the room.

Surfaces. You’ve probably been to one of those restaurants where you can barely hear the voice of a friend sitting beside you, let alone someone on the other side of the table because, in this crowded environment, there was simply too much noise. Stone or marble floor, tiled walls, solid concrete pillars and such. Every surface reflecting ever tiny bit of sound; not only voices, but clangs and bangs from the kitchen, the open doorways or windows letting in traffic sounds et cetera – bedlam! The deduction: hard surfaces reflect; soft ones absorb. You need always to keep this in mind.

Hard or soft surfaces do not only include walls, floors and ceilings. Everything from the type of furnishings, curtains, paneling, types of seat – bare metal or upholstered and padded – numbers of people in the audience. The more people there are the more your voice will be absorbed by their physical presence.

Huge audience. Of course, if the audience is massive, two, three, five hundred people – forget about speaking without a microphone. Just apologize to the speaker advisor and wait for them to solve the problem. If they can’t, then it’s up to them to do the apologizing to that great crowd. And once thing you can almost be sure of. He or she will ensure that it never again happens to them.

6. Different moods can be created by using different coloured chairs, desks, or tables.

7. Stylish hi tech modern designs, or traditional woods? What you choose will depend on the nature of your business. Your office furniture may be fashionable today, but will it still look stylish in 5 years time?

8. Think about the impression your office furniture has to give to clients as well as staff. Office furniture for a firm of accountants needs to be different from a graphic design company or a call centre. The office might be part of a factory or a restaurant or a shop, so it needs to be appropriate and in keeping with the company ethos. A design agency will want to appear creative and vibrant, whilst a solicitor’s office will want to appear calming and welcoming.

9. Think about the future, how easy is it to expand the office layout, using your chosen furniture? New employees or technology or processes and procedures may mean that the office layout has to change frequently. Can you move desk around yourselves, or do you need the fitters to take the desks apart so they can be rebuilt in a different part of the office?

10. Good office furniture will encourage employees to be more productive, by ensuring that all they need is at hand, and they can carry out their duties without disturbing others.

These tips should help you to decide which office furniture is best for your needs and will meet the needs of your staff, and give the right impression to your clients and other visitors. Not every room has to have a generic looking door that just serves the opening and closing purpose. Some doors can give you the ability to experiment with space and furniture.

Folding doors are often used as interior installations but many stores use them for quick close-up. The idea of this invention was to use the railing of a sliding door but to not take as much space. Cleverly, it was a success.

The best place to have a folding door installed is inside a big room. The chances are your big room has big furniture. With a folding door, furniture is easier to transport inside and out. A larger space makes dining room tables easier to manoeuvre.

Glass is quite an easy material to care for. You won’t have to worry about water damage during rainy season like you would for wooden doors. A simple soapy clean would get stain right off of glass whereas wood requires care and maintenance to keep the material solid and hard.
